This is the first and foremost important step to retrieve your old message. Whether you delete up your messages by mistake or change your device. In both cases, you should have your data backup account set up from earlier. So how to do it?
1. Open WhatsApp on your cellphone or tablet.
2. Click on the three dots options present in the extreme upper right corner.
3. Find Settings and click on it.
4. Click on the Chats option.
5. Click on Chat backup. You can see a lot of options there, in which one option of option is the 'Google Account'. You can see the screenshot below.

How to restore WhatsApp chat history backup?
Now you know how to take a backup of your all messages on WhatsApp. Now what to do with that? Suppose someday you missed your device, or you changed your device, then the backup taken as told above will be a boon for you that time. Now let's start step by step
There may be 2 cases:
CASE I
You are trying to restore WhatsApp messages on the same phone in which you took Google backup. This is done by users if they might have uninstalled WhatsApp from their phone by mistake or willingly, but have not reset their device. Then do this
a) Open WhatsApp on your new device.
b) Do the login procedure by putting in your old WhatsApp number.
c) As soon as your WhatsApp is verified, it will prompt you to take a backup from internal storage instead of your Google Account. This happens because whenever you take a backup on a Google account, one of its copies is also saved in your phone's internal memory. So if you have re-installed WhatsApp on the same old device, WhatsApp won't give you the option to restore your messages from the drive. Instead, it will prompt you to take a backup from internal storage, and your old messages will be stored.
d) Click on the confirm message, and your restore process will start.
e) Remember If you skip the process of taking backup from internal storage, you won't get any option to do it later.
CASE II
You are trying to restore WhatsApp messages on a new device, or if you have reset your old device and trying to restore WhatsApp messages on it.
a) Open WhatsApp on your new device.
b) Do the login procedure by putting in your old WhatsApp number.
c) As soon as your WhatsApp is verified, it will remind you to take a backup from the Google Account.
d) Select the Google Account and wait for the restore, and you are good to go.
